Delyle James Baltzer, 89, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away November 24, 2023. Born in South Dakota September 12, 1934, Lyle was the fourth child of John T. and Nathalie (Mogck) Baltzer. Lyle grew up on a farm that his grandparents homesteaded in Scotland, South Dakota.
In his early years, Lyle attended a one room country schoolhouse that had no more than 18 students, all different grades, through the 8th grade. Then he attended high school in Scotland,S.D., where he played the Baritone Horn in the school's band.
Lyle attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. After his junior year, he volunteered for the draft and served in the Army. He was stationed in South Korea were played the Baritone Horn in the Infantry Division Band. After completing 2 years of service, he returned to University of South Dakota to finish his final year of undergraduate studies where he earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
Lyle married Sue Ellen Waters a few years later, and eventually moved to Van Meter, Iowa where they raised their 3 daughters on a small acreage with horses, cats and dogs. Lyle enjoyed gardening and the beautiful scenery of this small rural midwestern town. After retiring, he moved to the warmer climate of Alexandria, Louisiana where he spent the rest of his years.
Lyle was adventurous, as evidenced by animated stories of his time working at a dude ranch in Colorado, fighting wildfires at Tin Cup Lake in Montana, and road tripping from South Dakota to Mexico City with his brother and friends. In retirement, he enjoyed taking cruises to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and more.
Above all else, Lyle was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. Left to cherish Lyle's life are his three daughters Emily Sue Weslake, Eleanor Lynn Hartsock, and Amy Baltzer Stone, his 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
