Mrs. Maggie Grover Haughton died at the age of 101, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Battlefield Park Healthcare Center. She was a native of Woodville, Mississippi. She was married to The Rev. Gilbert R. Haughton from 1952 until his death in 1989.
At the time of her marriage, she was a practical nurse. As the wife of an A. M. E. minister, she actively assisted in the work of the churches that her husband served. These churches were St. Matthew A. M. E. Church and Winterville Circuit, Greenville, Mississippi, Pearl Street A. M. E. Church, Jackson, Mississippi, St. James A. M. E. Church, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Bethel A. M. E. Church, Alexandria, Louisiana. She served as the Director of the Pearl Street Day Care Center at Pearl Street A. M. E. Church. On May 23, 2010, she was named as the recipient of the Rev. G. R. Haughton Community Award for her "loyalty and service given to Bethel A.M.E. Church and the Alexandria Community during the tenure of Rev. G. R. Haughton."
She relocated from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Petersburg, Virginia in 2005. She subsequently became a member of Gillfield Baptist Church.
Mrs. Haughton is survived by her sons, Harold J. Haughton, Sr. (Ethel) of Petersburg, Virginia and James R. Haughton (Charlean) of San Antonio, Texas; one grandson, Harold J. Haughton II (Yvette) of Hamden, Connecticut; two granddaughters, Annette Gaitan (Kim) of Kansas City, Kansas and Tanya Haughton of Austin, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Dante Haughton and Dania Haughton both of New Haven, Connecticut, Nicholas Gaitan of Louisville, Kentucky, and Keara Gaitan of Jefferson City, Missouri.
Services will be held 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Ora Peterson, eulogist. The entombment will occur at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 2, 2021 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Alexandria, LA, with Dr. Lydell L. Scott, of Bethel A. M. E. Church, officiating.
